Holgorsen favors Big 12 Conference expansion, championship game

Holgorsen favors both expansion and the Conference title game. ()

If West Virginia head coach Dana Holgorsen has his way, the Big 12 Conference could have some more members than its current ten team alignment in the future.

When prompted if he favored the possibility of expansion to the ten team Big 12 Conference, Holgorsen admitted that he would like to see the league grow by at least two members in the future.

“I’m in favor of expansion. I’m on the side of my boss president (Gordon) Gee, who’s in favor of expansion as well,” Holgorsen said.

While he admitted that it is not his place to recommend potential teams for the expansion candidates, Holgorsen did say that with his previous experience in the Big 12 Conference the number 12 makes things easier both for divisional realignment and getting together a championship game.

“I’d like to see two teams added. I think a good round number of 12,” he said.

Holgorsen also said that it wouldn’t hurt if the Mountaineers were able to secure an expansion partner that is closer to the school as it currently sits as a geographic outlier in the league.

On the topic of the upcoming Big 12 Championship game in 2017, Holgorsen said that he is absolutely in favor of that as well and has been vocal in the past about the disadvantage that the late December games create on the recruiting trail for teams.

“I’ve said this for a couple of years,” he said.

Details are still being ironed out on the details for the Big 12 Championship game such as if there will be divisions, how those will be aligned and when and where the game will be played.

The topic of expansion is still up for debate and is set to be discussed Tuesday.
