WVU season tickets behind, mini-packages ahead of last year's pace

West Virginia is experiencing a slight dip in season ticket sales from last season’s totals but an increase in the amount of mini-packages being sold for the 2016 season.

The total season ticket number currently sits at 25,500 which is lower than the 26,300 that had been sold at this time last season according to Matt Wells, associate athletic director for external affairs. That number was around 27,000 at this time in 2014.

The pace is not alarming to officials and the most cited reasons from fans have been both the economy and the time commitment required to hold season tickets.

The season ticket package currently sits at $395, a savings of $45 when buying each individual ticket, with a MAC donation of $425 for the red zone, $250 for the gold zone and $125 for the orange zone while some sections in the end zone seats in the green zone do not require one.

New to this season in celebration over the 125th year of West Virginia football is that fans that become season ticket holders receive a WVU125 flag. They also have created the hash tag #WVU125 for fans to share themselves with the flag on various social media platforms.

Last season a total of 28,837 packages were sold overall so according to Wells there is still plenty of time to make up the current difference in the pace.

“Overall things are good,” Wells said.

A total of 1,100 mini-packages have already been sold to priority MAC members and season ticket holders which is ahead of the less than 1,000 sold at this time last year.

Those packages, as well as individual game tickets, will go on sale to the general public July 6 and this season there are three different options to choose from in the mini-plans.

The Mountaineer plan is a four-game option featuring Missouri, Kansas State, Kansas and Oklahoma for $245. The Gold plan consists of three games in TCU, Kansas and Oklahoma for $185. And finally the Blue plan is another three-game option featuring Missouri, Kansas State and Baylor for $170.

“We will have a good availability for fans that are interested,” Wells said.

West Virginia has a home schedule that features seven games with Missouri Sept. 3, Youngstown State Sept. 10, Kansas State Oct. 1, TCU Oct. 22, Kansas Nov. 5, Oklahoma Nov. 19 and Baylor Dec. 3. The Mountaineers are coming off an 8-5 campaign in 2015 with a win over Arizona State in the Cactus Bowl.
